The story:

Not that my version isn't word salad, but Taupin's alleged lyrics
don't make a whole lot of sense either. If they shoot down her
plane (and she lives), it would take a whole lot more than a
couple of drinks for her to recover.

As with several of my other lyrics, I learned the correct version
from somebody else's wrong version on this site.
