The Story: You smell like goat, I'll see you in hell
It wasn't me--it was my college roommate (we went to an all-women's college, so maybe there's some connection...). I was playing Joni Mitchell in our dorm room, and she (hearing the song for the first time) said, "Wow, don't a lot of people find those lyrics offensive?" To which I said, "I don't think so..." She pressed further, "Is Joni Mitchell a lesbian?" Blank stare from me, "Um, I'm not sure." My roommate then began a lengthy discourse on how the song could be a leftist/feminist critique of lesbians selling out to corporate capitalism before I finally stopped her and demanded to know what on earth lesbians had to do with the song...and then her mondegreen was revealed.
