The story:

I always heard this as "piece of pie" since I was a kid. I never really questioned it - I thought it was maybe a little bit silly, but I thought it made enough sense. There are plenty of lyrical references to pie out there, meaning some kind of goal or dream or reward - i.e. "pie in the sky," "we finally got a piece of the pie," etc.
