The story:

I've known this song for 20+ years. At least I
thought I knew it for more than 20 years but given
my highly wrong lyrics, I clearly didn't. I
decided to Google the lyrics for some reason and
my jaw dropped! I never did understand how you'd
be dead before the bullet hit the phone, why the
phone got shot, how you died, or why you'd be
talking on the phone while someone was killing
you. I guess the victim called 911 or maybe it's
an **sassination attempt: while the victim
conducts business, the **sassin sneaks in and
kills him before someone else's bullet can hit the
phone?
