I always imagined it was a song about her being harrassed in some way.
I convinced my Dad that mine were the real words to this song. He thought the words were :
You don’t have to say you love me
Just because you can.
I'll post them for him.
I didn't realise the the words were any different until December 2009 when, at my daughters 21st birthday party, I started singing it a little too loudly (hic!). Luckily everyone thought I was rat arsed.
I do think my version is better and, yes I was on an interesting pint or three - only at the party though.
