This was actually misunderstood by a fellow camper, at summer camp in the early '70's (?).
I've always found it hilarious that he (ironically!) "misunderstood" these lyrics! I still chuckle when I think about (1) the futility of the original singer pleading just not to be misunderstood!, and (2) the thought, with the 'new' lyrics in mind, of the poor soul, whose intentions really are quite good, agonizingly singing about his tormented to urges to beat his son???? Still cracks me up!
