The story:

I knew what I was hearing HAD to be wrong, but I couldn't figure it
out, and I had the Fleetwood Mac album, "Rumours" on cassette
since my teens, and there was no lyric sheet. When I sang it to my
wife, who is a songwriter, she patted me on the shoulder
sympathetically, and then said that because the word "washes" is
accented on the atypical syllable, "wa-SHEZ," it's not all that odd
that I would mishear it. Or, as she said, "The emph-AH-sis is on
the wrong syl-LAH-ble."
