The story:

I was only in 4th grade when this song came out so it's hard to blame me for mishearing the lyric, but I was so completely confident that's what I heard that I would sing it this way on the bus and on the radio in my house at home. A few months later I was singing along and my mom burst out laughing, asking me, "What did you say?" I explained, and she revealed, through gasps of laughter, "FUNKY CHEAP HOTEL." But she was so amused by my rendition that now every time we hear that song, even if she doesn't sing along to any other part, she sings "funky chicken town."
