It was actually my college roommate who misheard them...apparently she'd been living under a rock throughout high school and had never heard a Nirvana song until I played Nevermind for her (about 6 years after Kurt Cobain died). I was bringing the CD with us to listen to in the car, and in her excitement she sang her version of Smells Like Teen Spirit in the crowded elevator.
