I always thought this line referred to Vladmir Ilyich Lenin (i.e. communist leader of Soviet Union.) Then I realized... hey wait a minute, this song's about "the day the music died" and in Lenin's time, not only had the music not died, it wasn't even born yet! So, I realized it referred to John Lennon from the Beatles.
