Where was the thunder?

The story:

When I was young my mom used to have this song on a casette tape (yeah, old-school) and would play it all the time.
I never really paid any attention to the lyrics, but loved to sing out the chorus "A-oooooooooo, where was the thunder?" My mom never told me I was singing the words wrong, and it wasn't until a friend heard me and laughed out loud at me, then made me listen closely to the song, before I knew how wrong I was.
