There was no embarrassing realization.
I actually knew the real lyrics before I misheard them, but one day I heard the song on the radio in the car and reception was quite poor, and these alternative words seem to appear.
I guess the pronunciation of "this love" as "this lurve" made it sound more like "the smurf".
Now I can not hear the song with the real words.
