I just discovered how wrong I was while reading the real lyrics on your website. I'm thinking back to all the times I've belted the song out at the top of my lungs.
I thought some one was in trouble and needed to go down and get in a police line up and "Don't carry me too far away" meant don't take me to jail. Sure the lyrics seemed strange, but who was I to question Steve Miller? Never mind the title of the song!
