The story:

I sang along to it this way for years, always kind of picturing people
standing in a police line-up chatting with each other, even though
that doesn't make any sense with the rest of the song. When I
found out the lyrics (I think a radio DJ announced the name of the
song) on a road trip, my friend and her husband and I started
laughing hysterically about my misheard lyrics. Then my friend's
husband admitted that he had always sung it as "Big hotel with the
light on." I think something about the pacing of the lyrics in the
song makes it hard to hear the original unless you know it
beforehand.
