I first heard this song at the tender age of four. The overall racial and social themes of the song were lost on me at such a young age, so "tub of lard" made just as much sense as anything else. Seventeen years later I came to the realization that it was highly unlikely that Bruce Hornsby was singing emphatically about Crisco.
