A girl I work with is an avid Pearl jam fan, and I asked her why they said that in the song. Her hysterical laughter informed me that I had been singing it wrong all these years. I was glad to learn the true lyrics as my version had never really made sense, but I'm pretty sure that there is a book or movie called "The Fisher King" so I figured maybe there was some sort of connection there.
