Either version works here. But it's clear that, at least when he wrote
this song, that Simon had not mastered the art of a love affair--this
song, and several others from the album of which this is the title
track, are about his breakup with Carrie Fisher.
It was only when I got a copy of the "Hearts and Bones" album that I
saw Simon's actual lyric on the CD insert.
