OK, I heard the lyrics correctly, but I was 6 years old when the song came out in 1962. I thought the song was about a blind girl.

At the time, there was also a brand of toothpaste called Ipana. I figured Ipanema was a country where everybody brushed their teeth with Ipana, so maybe she ignored him because he didn't brush with Ipana.
