The Story: You smell like goat, I'll see you in hell
It was my father, a resolute Deadhead, who misheard this lyric, and it was his favorite lyric of his favorite song by his favorite band. He asked that it be carved on his tombstone, a request we (his children) honored. A few years after he died, I found a copy of the actual lyrics.
We did not change the headstone. He believed those were the correct words, and so it shall remain.
The answers to the other questions - is your version better, did you convince anyone it was correct, are me speaking for him.
