The story:

I was well out of college, listening to an '80s tribute
band, when it dawned on me, independently, that
my version of this song was absurd. Perhaps a
grown man singing about another man wouldn't
raise many eyebrows these days but it should have
mine as a homophobic teenager in the '80s. And
not once did I ever think they were singing about a
female Daryl either (such as Hannah). In my mind
little Darryl was a guy and for some reason it was
okay. The best part is, because I used to sing the
song simply to embarrass my buddy's little brother
Darryl, I went uncorrected all these years by my
friends who thought I was goofing around since day
one.
