I was 15 when Cherry, Cherry came out, and my version made perfect sense to me. Over 25 years later a Neil Diamond impersonator in Vegas enunciated the words well enough for me to hear clearly. After the show, I heaped ridicule on the ersatz singer, saying that he was so bad that he couldn't even get the lyrics right. I "sang" my version, was immediately corrected, and suffered incessant ridicule myself throughout the rest of the trip - "OOHHH, check out the girl at the bar. What's the call on her waist?"
