I actually got into a 10 minute debate with a friend. I insisted that mine was the only way that made sense, since he was singing about his kid earlier in the song. Finally my friend looked it up, and I still didn't believe him--I needed three seperate sources before I was convinced he was right.

The child in question is described as "the child of my first marriage," so the narrator has had at least one divorce since the kid was born. Simon had divorced Carrie Fisher a few years before this song was released, so it might have been a reference to that relationship, or to some other girlfriend of Simon's.
