I used to love Johnny Rivers in the 60s. Poor Side of Town,
Summer Rain and especially this song which for several
years I knew as "Secret Asian Man." How did I find out?
Well, I always wondered how somebody could be secretly
Asian. Wouldn't that be obvious whether he is or isn't?
(Hey--I was only 10)
One day I asked my Japanese friend how a person could
be secretly Asian but, apparently, pass for another race?
He just laugh, explained the lyric to me, and I've felt
foolish even since. But to this day I can't shake the
memory and whenever I hear this song . . . I may be
belting out "Agent" but inside I'm secretly still singing
"Secret Asian Man!"
