As I saw it here on the site today. I thought maybe Taupin was using some kind of weird metaphor for our life's journey: y'know like that "road less traveled" from the Frost poem?
I'd decided that he was quickly wasting his life he felt..hence "burning down" the streets he's "headed on". Real lyric makes more sense in context though.
