The story:

I worked at a Midwestern bar with live music in the summer of 1974, and Randy Leeds was the singer for the house band. He was a pretty good singer, too. Now, needless to say, I had absolutely no reason to believe that Golden Earring were a Midwestern group (they're Dutch, actually) or that they would ever had heard of this singer or this band. But as with many other of my misheard lyrics, I just SOMEHOW managed to convince myself they DID know of Randy Leeds, and that my version was correct. 36 years later, I finally decided to look up the real lyrics here on kissthisguy.com-- the rest is history.
