My friend Therese heard it this way. She figured he was singing with a cockney accent and dropping the "h." She had a crush on Billy and must've fantasized about how she would feel if Billy were asking her out on a date, so it wasn't so much embarrassing learning the real lyrics as disappointing. The real lyrics didn't really speak to her in the same way.
