There is a great a cappella cover of this song done by a group from Atlanta called Live Wire. They enunciated the lyrics enough to make me realize they were saying "sailors." Until then, it made sense that the zoot suit guys were referring to "sweaters" to mean the squares, from whom a zoot suit daddy would easily steal a hot girl.
