The story:

a few months ago, i bought the paperback "john denver, the complete lyrics", so then i tried to hear the line properly. still hard, and not because i'm old and deaf. because i'm not. (deaf, that is......)

i never was able to decipher that line, and heard it variously as "cut the chard" or "cut the charm", neither of which made sense.
