The story:

I really thought David Coverdale was singing about being gay and how he had no friends, until I realised that a hobo can be another term for someone who is homeless and has no fixed abode.
The song also was released with the lyric "like a drifter I was born to walk alone" which I'm sure was changed because the rest of the band thought exactly the same as I did!!!
