Decades after I first heard and mis-interpreted this lyric, I heard a music commmentator talking about the Sham's use of the term "L 7", which he explained was a Bohemian slang term for someone who was "square." The expression was supposedly spoken while using the finger to draw an L and then a 7, making a square. An embarrassing but educational moment I'm happy to share!
