    The story:

    I thought the lyric was claiming that not only had the singer hit a home run, he had actually hit the ball so hard that he reduced his bat to unrecognizable splinters in the process. While this might seem improbable, it fit the mythic baseball boasting of the song well enough that I didn't question it for many years.
