The story:

For several formative years my parents allowed me to refer to this song as "The Muppet Song" without correcting me (snickering, no doubt, behind their traitorous hands). I got really excited whenever it was on the radio, because there were muppets involved. When I was about twelve I found the lyrics in a songbook and felt betrayed. When confronted, my mother claimed to believe that my version was a purposeful alteration. Ha!
