I just read someone else's and realized how wrong I was. I've been going around singing it this way to the T. Rex version for a long time, but noone else here knows the real lyrics so it won't be too bad. But I always thought that it made more sense (even though I don't think it's supposed to be about New York City) because later in the song he says his parents won't let him use the car, etc., etc.
