    "I went hiking with Joe Spivy;
    He developed poison ivy.
    You remember Lynyrd Skynyrd;
    He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner."

    Artist: Allan Sherman
    Song: Camp Granada
    Real Lyric: "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda, Here I am at Camp Granada. Camp is very entertaining, And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining. I went hiking with Joe Spivy; He developed poison ivy. You remember Leonard Skinner; He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner. All the counselors hate the waiters, And the lake has alligators, And the head coach wants no sissies, So he reads to us from something called Ulysses. Now I don't want that this should scare you, But my bunkmate has malaria. You remember Jeffery Hardy, They're about to organize a searching party. Take me home, oh Mudda, Fadda, Take me home, I hate Granada! Don't leave me out in the forest, Where I might get eaten by a bear. Take me home, I promise I will not make noise, Or mess the house with other boys, O please don't make me stay, I've been here one whole day. Dearest Father, Darling Mother, How's my precious little brudda? Let me come home if you miss me, I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me. Wait a minute, it stopped hailing, Guys are swimming, guys are sailing. Playing baseball, gee that's betta, Mudda, Fadda kindly disregard this letta!"

    The story:

    Heard this one Summer 20 years ago- =1990= -when
    the D.J. was running the "Best Top 40 Songs Ever
    For Summer", & he invited the listening audience
    to submit song suggestions, & one caller said
    "Camp Granada" by comedic songster Allan Sherman;
    never really heard the 1963 tune in its entirety,
    only played the Milton Bradley game, & was also a
    fan of "Camp Runamuck", the 1965-6 sitcom starring
    Arch Johnson that seemed to be based on "Granada"
    as well, at age 9.
    You notice a commonality here?
    All things "camp".
    Anyway, it's 1990, & am listening w/ some buds to
    Allan's dulcet tones & the line comes on about,
    "...You remember Lynyrd Skynyrd; He got ptomaine
    poisoning late night after dinner...", and we
    started coughing & laughing until milk came out of
    our noses - & we weren't even drinking any MILK!
    So I started raving that the group "Lynyrd
    Skynyrd" copped their name off of this song, & the
    crew agreed it this was so.
    Until that is, a pal who was a REAL Lynyrd Skynyrd
    'nyrd' told us that they didn't take it off of the
    1963 Allan Sherman song, but off of their
    High(!)School Gym Teacher who forced the boys w/
    long locks to wear hairnets much like the one
    school cafeteria workers or Ruth Buzzi as "Gladys
    Ormphby" on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" did, which
    naturally the guys balked at.
    He wanted to humiliate & shame them to cut off
    their hair.
    The name of the Phys. Ed. Coach:
    Leonard Skinner -just like in the "Camp Granada"
    song after all!
    In fact the disgruntled Skinner, w/ the same name
    as the Principal on "The Simpsons" & "The X Files"
    FBI boss, threatened to sue the band if they used
    his name, so they altered it so the tale goes, to
    not only protect themselves against litigation,
    but also partly as a tribute to The Byrds, hence
    all the "y"'s.
    So now you know "Y" Lynyrd Skynyrd.
    A mudder always eats its fodder....

    What in blue-blazes! Allen Sherman & Lynyrd Skynyrd together?! Ever hear of Sherman's "Pop Hates The Beatles" song? Remember seeing him on Ed Sullivan, but don't think Skynyrd was ever on.
