I hear the voice of wreckage and ruin

The story:

From 1984 to 1998 our club circuit band sang these lyrics,
believing them to be correct. No one ever put us right. In the
case of the first one, we listened dozens of times to the
original without being able to decipher the correct version! So
our version was really just the 'line of best fit'.

The last one regarding an eye for an eye, I have included
because in no way did we sing this line. In fact, it was only
whilst composing this submission that I discovered what it
was! We sang something completely different.
