The story:

I'd been covering the song at gigs for 3 or 4 years, and the bass player out of the support band asked me in a puzzled tone what I'd sung. I told him and he asked who the hell was Dahmer? I said "Jeffrey Dahmer the serial killer!"
He burst out laughing and told me the real lyrics. I was still on the mike at the time!
