I never misheard the lyric.

The story:

Concerning the Purple Haze lyrics, I bought the original album a week after it came out. I always thought the lyric was, "'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky" and that is the correct lyric. A number of years ago on the "I Want To Be a Millionaire" game show, they made a mistake and they had the lyric as, "'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy." That's when I looked into it. I got the copyrighted lyrics and the line is, "'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky." After the song came out Hendrix was aware that many people misunderstood the lyric, so sometimes as a spoof at concerts he said, "Kiss This Guy," but that was never the lyric to the song.

The fact is that Purple Haze was a type of Acid (LSD) in the 1960s and that's what the song was about. He took Acid, hallucinated, and saw a Purple Haze in the Sky, so that's why he Kissed the Sky.
