The story:

Unlike most lyrics I mishear, but can't figure out, this one I actually
thought I was hearing correctly. There are many rock songs which
have references which are region-specific, age-specific, culture-
specific, behavior specific, or drug specific. I thought it might be
one of those. One time my wife and I were in the car and "Pink
Houses" came on. But this time it was a special acoustic version,
and the lyrics were much clearer, so I understood the lines correctly
for the first time. I started laughing, and I told my wife what I had
been hearing all these years. She said, "But your version makes NO
sense!" I agreed. It was yet another of my brain's odd little gems.
