My mom had a 45 of this song when I was a kid and "potato" made perfect sense to me at the age of five. Remember the game "hot potato"? Well, much, much later my husband and I heard this song in a restaurant and I was commenting about Elvis making this rather unromantic comparison between lips and a potato. My husband, of course, knew the real lyrics.
