He'd give the ball of his compass and sleep out in the rain

The story:

I was with a friend who sang it correctly and then I corrected him with my incorrect version followed by an argument how mine had to be right since if you gave the ball of your compass you could not find your way home and thus would be lost and inevitably have to 'sleep out in the rain'. He didn't buy it and then eventually I had egg on my face.
