Tell me, why does that preacher man carry that sawed off shotgun in his hand?

The story:

My department engineer, a Mormon Bishop, had issues. I would crank up the volume on the tape deck of my 71 Chevy Impala while heading home from the swing shift and sing along. That was 1991 and I was 33.
I recalled the song from years past, not knowing the lyrics then (I was a kid, OK? Forgive me!) and had recently dug out the tape because the melody was in my head.
The Nazarth Collection is a cornerstorne of my collection and it wan't until I was archiving my music a few years later that I stumbled across a title (Vigilante Man) I didn't recognize and went searching for the song.
I cranked up the album, fired off a bowl and freaked out when I caught on. It still makes sense to me...the Bishop was a p***k and I can still see him carrying that sawed-off shotgun in his hand....
