The story:

Lyrics puzzled me for years until I had this idea they were some surreal reference to Greek mythology - Chiron is another name for Centaur which has head, arms and trunk of a human and body and legs of a horse. In an alcoholic haze, I remember convincing a load of my mates - in similar alcoholic stupour - of the 'deep hidden meaning of the lyrics'. I got calls over next few days from people saying at last they understood what the lyrics meant and that they'd passed the tale on to their friends etc. etc. Ten days later, Stranglers Hugh Cornwell did an interview on radio explaining the real lyrics. It was so bloody cringe-making that I virtually went into hiding for a month. Cringeing now - just thinking about it.
