I've misheard the song since it appeared on the Woodstock album 20-some years ago. It recently appeared as the soundtrack for a Tide detergent commercial and my jaw dropped. I thought, now they are talking real grass stains. I told everyone I could about Tide using Canned Heat's marijuana song. I was ready to write Tide a letter about the ad...but decided to check out the lyrics before taking any action, just in case. I was shocked, astounded, dumfounded that I have misheard the lyrics these many years. I still don't believe that Alan Wilson is not singing "Where the mar-i-ju-ana grows"...
