This was actually was my younger sister's mishearing. I had been playing Murmur non-stop in my car for a couple months in the 80's so she had been hearing it a whole lot and it guess it seeped in. Then one day, independent of the car or R.E.M, she says, "Ya know, I really like that song about zombies crawling out of trenches." It took a while to figure out what song she was talking about. Granted Michael Stipe's famous mumbled vocals are prone to misinterpretation but I think this one deserves special commendation.
