"Businessman there, drink my wine;

Nobody argued its worth.

The story:

Growing up in the late 60's/early 70's, I heard Hendrix when he was brand new. At the time I was doing a lot of acid; smoking pot was just a way to get from one trip to the next. I wasn't into Bob Dylan because of the way he sang, although I loved renditions of his songs by PP&M, the Byrds, and others. When I heard "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix, I wasn't aware that it was a Dylan song, and had no idea what the lyrics really were.

I knew that in "If 6 Was 9" Hendrix had sang, "Go ahead on there, Mr. Businessman; you can't dress like me." And so I took the first line of the quote above to be a singular reference, addressing each one alone: "Businessman, there..." I got the "drink my wine" part right, but I swear, to this day it sounds like he is singing, "Come and dig my herb", which made perfect sense at the time: "Mr. Businessman, shuck off all that self-righteous posturing and keep-up-with-the-Jonses nonsense, and come get high with me."

And I thought that as reassurance to Mr. Businessman that it would be worth his time and effort, Jimi sang, "None will level on the line," meaning, "My wine and herb will not leave you straight. You're going to get pretty high."

Finally, leaving off from the quoting of his speech to Mr. Businessman, Jimi reports to us, the listeners to the song, that "Nobody argued its worth." They were all convinced.
