The story:

I've long been aware that Manichowder is a fictitious municipality; I
only recently learned that my brain, not Simon's, invented it. Of
course the narrator is talking about his birthplace. I'm not sure
whether Manichowder is supposed to be in New Brunswick or Nova
Scotia: we are explicitly told that it is in Atlantic Canada, and it is
strongly implied that he can drive from there to New England, which
rules out Prince Edward Island (the Confederation Bridge did not
exist when this song was written) and Newfoundland.
