The story:

I always knew I was on shaky ground with my comprehension of this, but it wasn't until I was at a party in the early 80s and everyone was drunkenly dancing and singing along that I realized that I was singing a very different set of words. I put it down to Richard Jobson's almost incomprehensible Dunfermline accent - yet he doesn't sound like that on the TV now, why is that?
